Group Credit Controller/ Sales Ledger

About The Role

We are looking for an experienced and commercially focused Credit Controller to join our team and take ownership of a varied portfolio of B2B and B2C receivables.
 
As a Credit Controller, you will be responsible for managing and recovering outstanding balances from local councils, NHS and private customers, while minimising bad debt and ensuring payments are received within agreed timescales.
This is a fast-paced role that requires a proactive and solutions-focused approach. You will investigate the reasons behind overdue balances, resolve disputes, identify potential risks and work collaboratively with teams across the business to achieve the best possible outcome.
 
About You
Responsibilities for the Credit Controller:
Take ownership of a portfolio of B2B and B2C accounts, ensuring outstanding balances are actively managed and recovered.
Effectively manage and prioritise daily cases based on value, age, risk, urgency and likelihood of recovery.
Investigate and resolve payment disputes, account queries and discrepancies promptly and accurately.
Monitor aged debt and take proactive action to prevent balances from becoming further overdue.
Identify potential bad debt and escalate higher-risk accounts appropriately.
Maintain accurate and comprehensive records within CRM systems, Excel and other internal systems.
Ensure agreed actions and payment commitments are followed up within the required timescales.
Work closely with Accounts Receivable, Finance, Commercial and other internal teams to resolve issues preventing payment.
Identify recurring issues contributing to outstanding debt and recommend practical improvements.
Contribute to the development and implementation of collection strategies, processes, controls and procedures.
Produce and maintain accurate reports and provide updates on portfolio performance, outstanding balances and recovery activity.
Take ownership of individual and team targets, contributing to the overall performance of the Credit Control function.
Support colleagues and share knowledge, best practice and effective collection techniques across the team.
Challenge existing ways of working and proactively suggest improvements to the Credit Control function.
Previous experience within Credit Control, Collections, Accounts Receivable or a similar financial role.
Excellent telephone communication and objection-handling skills.
Strong negotiation and influencing skills, with the confidence to have difficult conversations professionally.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Sage 50 and (Cold Harbour not essential)
Excellent organisation and time management skills, with the ability to manage a high-volume caseload and competing priorities.
Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to account management.
The ability to investigate issues, identify root causes and find practical solutions.
Confidence working with internal stakeholders and external customers, dealers and business partners.
The ability to remain calm and professional when dealing with challenging or sensitive situations.
A proactive approach to identifying risks and preventing debt from becoming aged or unrecoverable.
A willingness to learn, develop and take ownership of your workload.
The ability to work independently while contributing positively to a wider team.
Experience within the care industry, financial services, lending or high-volume collections would be advantageous.
